River God
It was a beautiful day as we sailed down the Thames with my old mate Rich Hubbard. The memory grows stronger, the longer he stays away on the shores of heaven.
Rich was at worship on the water. Although baptised many years before, he lived out a continual baptism experience on the river. It was his contemplation and delight.
He was a great speaker – both enlightening and entertaining. But he was at his best when, suddenly, he would encapsulate some vast theological premise within a short phrase.
As the boat hugged a bend, the narrow channel opened out into a broad riverscape. A weeping willow stirred the still waters. We had been talking about God, and Rich blurted out, ‘This is all Christ’.
The Thames in all its splendour gave us a momentary glimpse of glory. I realised in that moment why Rich always loved to sail.
