Buzz the revelator

He might not be an aviator. But he is a revelator. Okay, Buzz Lightyear might be a character in a kids’ movie. Yet he offers us all a message of hope.
Toy Story is a big family favourite. And when it came on the telly last Sunday, I just found myself watching it. Yes, it has plenty of laughs for the little ones. But there’s a serious lesson to learn – when Buzz aims for the wild blue yonder through an open window. Thinking he is actually a space ranger, he opens his wings and leaps into the air, ready to fly away.
But he fails. He hits the floor. He realises he is just a little toy and cannot fly. Buzz finds out something everyone has to come to terms with. We’re all just tiny specks in a massive universe. It’s a painful moment for Buzz, who has a grand image of himself. However, true self-realisation is healthy. We see ourselves in the right perspective.
Thankfully, Toy Story doesn’t end there. Faithful friend Woody confirms that, yes, he is just a toy. But there is a young lad called Andy who thinks the world of him and wants him home. Having realised he is merely a small dot in space, Buzz now recognises he is also loved. That makes the difference. It mobilises him to action. He fights to get home, because there he will find that love.
It’s good for every human to know we are minuscule amid this mighty cosmos. It is also good to know we are cherished – particularly by the paternal being who breathed life into existence. Though small, yet somehow we are significant, because of his love. (Image: Disney/www.starpulse.com)
